Day 6 of Offroading – After breakfast in camp (I might have had a Danish from Ben’s truck), we break camp and head towards Monument Valley. Of course we had to stop at Forrest Gump Point and then take a quick drive through Monument Valley Tribal Park, a location used for many Western movies.
Back to Mexican Hat for gas and around to the Goosenecks of the San Juan State Park where we made some tuna sandwiches for lunch. The meanders of the San Juan River here are over 1000 feet deep. Millions of years ago the river was on a low flat plain and the meanders developed, later the plain uplifted causing the river to cut the meanders deeper.
Then we drove up the Moki Dugway (dirt switchbacks that Google maps will not route you through) to Hwy 95, followed by a long drive north crossing the Colorado River at Hite. (When Lake Powell is full, it reaches all the way up here, 200 miles from the dam: but its been many years since that has happened.) We turned on the road to Ticaboo, our next gas stop and last chance for gas.
Further down the road past Ticaboo was the turnoff for the Burr Trail, near Bullfrog on Lake Powell, which was visible as we got higher on the trail. The trail was paved which we were not expecting, and paved for most of the way. A few miles before the Burr Trail Switchbacks it turned to dirt. We turned on the Wolverine Loop Road and started looking for a place to camp. After a number of marginal camp site possibilities, we finally found a great site and set up camp before the sun went down. Tucker cooked up a very good chicken pasta dinner for us. The evening was capped off when Tucker brought out his propane campfire ring.
