On Oct 14 Susan and Cliff arrived at the RV Park north of Moab and setup the trailer. Having some extra time, we went out to Onion Creek a scenic narrow canyon east of Moab. We came back to camp where we met up with Ben who had driven out from San Jose, CA. After Ben set up his camp, we packed up dinner and drove the 2 Land Cruisers to Marlboro Point to have dinner and watch the sunset.
Day 2 – We headed to the Dome Plateau 4×4 Trail. At the start of the trail, we came across a group with the “Bronco Off-Roadeo”. (This school provides Bronco owners with offroad training, which Ford includes for new owners of certain new Broncos). The Dome Plateau trail was washed out in a number of places by flash floods a few weeks earlier. So, after trying several routes that we couldn’t get through, we decided to head back to camp.
Day 3 – Cliff and Ben set off to explore the area east of the Green River north of Moab. They came by the Dubinky Well, then on to Spring Point overlooking the Green River. They saw some prehistoric survivors called Triops. Triops have been around for about 200 million years. After seeing the Bowknot on the Green River it was on to White Wash Dunes.
Day 4 – The 3 of us headed into Arches National Park on a rugged 4WD trail. After seeing a number of arches only visible to those using the long 4WD trail, we came out on a paved park road and stopped at a number of the well known sights in the Park.
Day 5 – We traveled the lower part of the Shafer Trail, starting at the potash evaporation ponds. (Potash is primarily used in fertilizers.) We stopped at some of many overlooks of the Colorado River. The most famous one is Thelma & Louise Point, where the final scene of the movie of that name was filmed. That’s where we ate our lunch. We then headed over to Goblin Valley State Park to meet up with our mutual friend Dan, whom we hadn’t seen in about 30 years. Dan, Ben and Cliff all worked at Datacopy in Silicon Valley in the mid-1980s.
Day 6 – Ben left in the morning to head back to San Jose. Cliff and Susan headed to the Canyon Rims Recreation Area south of Moab, which has some great overlooks of the Canyonlands country.
Day 7 – Cliff and Susan break camp in the morning and head to the KOA in Springville, UT.
