We started the off-road part of our trip on Oct 8, driving to the RV Park in Hanksville, UT at the edge of the San Rafael Swell.
Day 1 – Before going into the Swell, we took Poison Spring road into the Robbers Roost area. (The Robbers Roost was an outlaw hideout southeast of Hanksville used mostly by Butch Cassidy, Sundance Kid and their Wild Bunch gang. The maze of narrow canyons allowed them to lose any posses following them.)
Day 2 – We entered the Swell at Goblin Valley State Park and hiked Little Wild Horse slot canyon. From there we drove through Wild Horse Mesa & Muddy Creek Wilderness Areas to come out of the Swell at Factory Butte.
Day 3 – We head back into Swell’s Wild Horse Mesa to find a herd of wild horses. The herd has a neat white wild horse. Then its over to Crack Canyon Trailhead to hike through the canyon. This scenic slot canyon has wildly sculptured walls.
Day 4 – Before leaving for Green River we talked to the folks in the RV next to us that had four birds with them. They get together with other bird owners to give their birds “free flight” time. They go to remote areas, put GPS trackers on the birds, and turn them lose to fly. The birds come back after a time, or they have track them down with the GPSs. We then moved to the Green River, UT KOA for two days. Where Cliff picked up some rear brake pads and installed them on the Land Cruiser.
